As one of the most widely used power transmission components in modern mechanical engineering, helical gears differ fundamentally from the more common straight-cut spur gears in the orientation of their teeth. Unlike spur gears that have teeth cut parallel to the gear’s axis, helical gear teeth are cut at a constant helical angle, wrapping diagonally across the gear body. This angled design allows teeth to engage gradually rather than snapping into contact all at once, resulting in significantly smoother operation, reduced noise and vibration, and higher load capacity compared to equivalent-sized spur gears. The gradual meshing of teeth also creates a larger total contact area between interacting gear teeth, distributing working stress more evenly across the gear surface and extending the component’s service life under heavy operating conditions. While single helical gears generate an axial thrust force along the gear shaft that requires additional thrust bearings to manage, this drawback is easily solved by double helical (also called herringbone) gears, which cancel out axial thrust by combining two mirrored sets of helical teeth on a single gear body.
